It is used to assess the average heat load on the human body. It utilizes the natural wet bulb temperature (Tnw) and the globe temperature (Tg), with the addition of the air dry bulb temperature (Ta) in open-air conditions. The WBGT index is calculated as follows:
Indoor or outdoor without solar radiation: WBGT = 0.7 Tnw + 0.3 Tg
Outdoor with solar radiation: WBGT = 0.7 Tnw + 0.2 Tg + 0.1 Ta
Heat stress: Refers to the degree of heat exposure experienced by the human body when working in a hot environment, expressed by the WBGT index. It depends on the heat production from physical labor and the characteristics of heat exchange between the environment and the human body.
